Alber & Milliff called this "home"

Above: This jungle tent at Dobodura was HOME!

Below: 'Joe' Milliff was my tent mate. What you see here is a two-man tent, in the trees, the idea of course that if there was strafing, they couldn't see you. I appreciated him very much because he was a great slit trench digger. He had a deathly fear of night bombers. The only night bombers we ever had is what we called "washing machine Charlie." It was a relatively small biplane with small, 25-pound bombs that never hit anything. The idea was that he was supposed to keep you awake all night. Subsequently, he got a little obnoxious so we put up Bong one night to see if he could knock him down, but the radar capabilities were not too great at that time so Bong didn't get him. Later, P-61 Black Widow night fighters came onto the scene and took care of Charlie.

Sure looks like George Alber to me....

P-38s in formation

This shows a pretty good formation of P-38s.

P-38s in formation over the Pacific

Above & Below: Now this shows the two drop tanks and the formation of other airplanes. The drop tanks were our biggest bane, when the leader saw the enemy he would drop tanks and we would too. The problem was they didn't always go. If you still had one tank you were supposed to go home. We lost a lot of efficiency that way because of that. It was not a matter of bad maintenance, it was just a matter of bad design.
