Geography lesson: (Dobodura to Rabaul) go here |
Above & Below: This is the Kiriwina Australian Air Operations where we refueled on our way to Rabaul. We would wait for bombers to pass over and then we'd take off to escort them to Rabaul. |
The squadron went to Rabaul about 9 times, I went 5 times. It was a bad
place. It was heavily defended. This time was a low-level attack, we took
turns doing that. We had a guy who was shot down near Rabaul, he flew on
to the west. He took to his chute and landed in the jungle. After about a
day a guy tapped him on the shoulder. It was an Australian coast watcher.
He stayed about a month hiding with him and then a submarine picked him
up.
When my brother and I met up after the war (he was a Corsair carrier pilot flying out of the Guadalcanal area) he was berating me saying: "you guys didn't keep the time right.. you left before we got there and they were waiting for us!" But being a lowly pilot, I didn't know what arrangements were being made for all the other groups to attack. He was quite the character! |
L-R: This is me and my friends, Joe Milliff, Jim Harris III, and Eddie Howes, all sitting on a P-38. They were all good guys. |
At Dobodura: This is a P-40 after landing, with its hydraulics shot out. |
